Winter: Book Review
4.5 Stars. My heart is happy. This series is precious.
First off, the plot of this book was pretty nuts – packed to the brim with action. Completely wild and stressful. I was in CONSTANT worry about all my little book darlings. Honestly there were very few dull moments.
Is it completely contradictory for me to say this book was light and sweet but also intense and full of feels?
Winter + Jacin
Alright, I’m probably in the minority on this one. I wasn’t as attached to them as I was the other characters. I just couldn’t connect with Winter. She’s a bit loony – though I appreciate the reason why. Even still, her POV was my least favorite. Not sure why- I just wasn’t as interested in her. I wasn’t totally into that romance either- I just didn’t feel the connection. Didn’t hate it- just wasn’t into it.
Scarlet + Wolf
Scarlet really grew on me. I never disliked her- but I came to really appreciate her and her fearlessness in this book. As far as Wolf is concerned- idk. He was ok. Like Winter + Jacin- I didn’t feel them as much but they didn’t detract from the story. I know, I’m in the minority.
CRESS + THORNE
They are about to hijack this review because I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. Hell to the yes. I can’t even. You guys- they are my new favorite OTP. Cress is just the sweetest and cutest little thing- her heart is SO precious. And Thorne- oh my goodness. He’s so hilarious but so serious about her… he can’t even bring himself to flirt with the girl because he cares about her so much… and maybe more… you’ll have to see.
I can’t even express how they made me feel… I was rooting for them so hard and it probably made me care less about everyone else because I was so invested in them. I’m not even sorry. I haven’t cared that much about a couple pairing up in such a long time.
I NEED MORE CRESS AND THORNE…. THIS WAS NOT ENOUGH. There were simply not enough scenes… I need more…
Cinder + Kai
Also precious. I don’t even have much to say other than I loved them. Kai is so selfless and just an all around good guy. Cinder is a very relatable heroine – so determined despite her struggles. Together, they are just cuteness.
There were just so many moments I was panicking – while at the same time thinking… she can’t actually hurt my darlings.. she just can’t. Just expect a wild ride.
I’m still not sold on her being a great villain. She felt very gullible and childish- not so much scary or even well developed. Yeah yeah, I know. The novella is supposed to help with that. Honestly I don’t know if I’m interested in her enough to read it. I’ll take everyone’s word for it- but she just felt stereotypical to me… the whole ‘Damaged evil queen being evil because she was hurt a long time ago’ thing. I think if the author had connected her more with some of the characters and given her more emotional struggle, I would have felt for her more. She wasn’t exactly cunning either. I’m in the minority though- most people tend to have strong feelings towards her.
The world building was still a bit meh – but I’m glad it didn’t focus on that too much. I was too invested in the characters, and the lack of world building info dump worked to my advantage. Sometimes I prefer to leave it to my imagination.
Either way- I adore this series now and I’m so thankful I finally read it. I definitely recommend!
