I”m doing it! I’m submitting to PitchWars.
For those of you who don’t know, #pitchwars is a contest hosted by Brenda Drake, and writers who have a finished manuscript can submit it to a list of mentors. From what I understand, the mentors are on a volunteer basis, and they dig through the submissions and each choose one mentee to work with over the next few months to fix and polish their manuscript in order to get it ready for agent submissions!
For all you amazing mentors out there, can I first say a huge THANK YOU for volunteering your time like this? Please know that whoever you choose… it will be a life-changing experience. For that, us hopefuls couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity.
Now without further delay… here’s some fun facts about my YA FANTASY novel! You’ll discover the gist in my query, but who doesn’t want to look at a bunch of pretty pictures and gifs?
Here’s what you can expect:
Princes. Castles. Romance. Friendships. Betrayal. Map (yeah I totally drew a map for fun). Country politics. RIVALRY. Unique settings.
What my book DOESN’T have:
No paranormal elements. No fairies, werewolves, elves, witches, or anything of the sort. I have no problems with them, but it doesn’t fit in this particular world! No erotica (obviously), no rape, gore, etc. (But I do have action!)
Let’s take a look at my cast. (BTW-here’s my pinterest boards!)
I am totally and completely obsessed with villains and morally gray characters (looking at you, Darkling dear.) If you’re a mentor who is equally obsessed, can we please flail together? AHHH.
Does my villain become a love interest, you ask? *Evil laugh*
Why, maybe. You’ll have to see. *Runs and hides*
Does my book have just one of these mysterious doods?
Oh no. I like to throw as many of them in there as possible. (But only fully developed ones, of course.)
I know everyone loves a badass heroine, but what about a heroine who takes a while to come into her own? If you’re looking for a flawed MC who must undergo development, I hope you’ll take a moment to meet mine. She starts off resentful, self-centered, and let’s face it, gullible. Does she have a character arc? Hell yes. I cried.
But most importantly, as much as I love heroines who can kick ass 100% of the time, I also believe strength isn’t just physical. It is my goal to craft stories that show other forms of strength with attributes such as cleverness, kindness, and hopefulness. This is true for all my leading ladies, including my MC.
Lastly, one of my girls has a chronic illness like myself. It isn’t the focus of the story, and it isn’t revealed until later, but its important to me to have representation for those who struggle day in and day out to have a normal life in the midst of pain.
Friendships + Romance
Friendships are SO important to me. My favorite novels are based around strong friendships that extend past romantic ones. But what about romance, you say? Heck yes, romance is definitely a major player. No instalove here, though. You’ll have to suffer through tension and agony first. (I’ll take it as a compliment if I can make you sweat.)
BUT IS THERE MAGIC?
Yes, but its a new magic system that is more scientific. How did I come up with it? I have no idea. It just happened.
As a mentee…
I’m fully dedicated to my story, and that means I’m willing to chop, revise, and scrap just about anything. In no way do I think I’m perfect, and I’m desperate to learn and grow. I’m driven and self motivated, so you won’t have to chase me down or worry that I won’t meet a deadline. I want someone to see my vision and help me find ways to tell it better! I’m also very interested in improving my scene craft, and I’ve been hard at work learning as much as I can. I’d also like to point out that I plan on hiring sensitivity readers.
I’m also a total goof, crazy fangirl, and a lover of life. I’m a happy person and I get excited easily (the flailing wasn’t a joke.)

A little about me:
I’m Brittney, and my life hasn’t turned out like I expected (and that’s ok). I grew up as an artist. I went to school for design, graduated with honors, and became a web designer. Not long after, I was promoted to Art Director and given a team of designers to serve/lead. It was my dream job, but who knew I had another dream buried beneath the soil?
I got really sick, and I mean REALLY sick. We didn’t know what was wrong with me at the time, and after my condition worsened, I made the decision to give up my job. (Long story short, I was diagnosed with Lyme Disease.)
I started reading. A LOT. Between all the doctors appointments and days spent in bed or IV room, reading became that one thing I could look forward to. It helped me to keep up hope and stay determined. Not only that, but the reading community has changed my life. I’ve met friends I wouldn’t trade for the world. I met people with struggles very similar to mine (and different too) and it has helped shape me into the person I am today. Now, I’m a book reviewer/blogger, and I’ve worked the past year to create an online presence. I LOVE helping authors spread the word about their books!
And then I realized writing was a form of art I could do even when my body wouldn’t cooperate in other ways. I fell so deeply in love with it, and here I am. I actually loved writing in my earlier years, but I became so busy and wrapped up in life that I overlooked something that would become my greatest solace and hobby. Words can’t express how much joy it brings into my life.
Lastly, I’m a Christian, and I believe God is LOVE. I believe in loving others as you love yourself, treating others as you would want to be treated. The media/politics make me sick. If I could wrap a giant hug around the world, I would.
(Also a huge shout-out to my husband, who is the most selfless man on earth for loving a wife who can’t return the massages, can’t clean the house, and can’t even make her own breakfast. I LOVE YOU. If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t be writing.)
