Okay, before you judge me – READ MY REVIEW OF THE SECOND BOOK!
I know a lot of people adored this book, but it just didn’t grab me. I’ve had several people recommend this to me (for great reasons) but it lived up to my expectations of being quite girly, insta-lovey, and a bit unbelievable. I’m sorry but the cover doesn’t help. Please note that my opinion of this series has drastically changed though, now having read the second installment.
As I’ve said before, I don’t like rewriting my version of the summary in reviews. I won’t say much about the plot itself. I tend to focus more on the characters themselves.
At the start, our heroine actually aggravated me quite a bit. It wasn’t even her personality- it was her self-preserving, self-protecting choices that frustrated me. And yet, the prince and the assassin are almost immediately madly in love with her. Why? Is she pretty? We don’t know. Is she smart? Maybe. Yet both boys are constantly stalking her (for personal reasons, I get that…) but forgive me boys, I just can’t see realistic characters thinking about a girl the way they do her. When Pearson talks through their perspectives- it just seems very feminine, talking about feelings and such. It just didn’t come across as realistic to me, I’m sorry. I found myself rolling my eyes quite a bit.
What I DID love at the start was the world building- the ways the kingdoms interact with each other and such. Each kingdom is very unique and has vastly different beliefs. We make many interesting preconceived notions that continue to shatter as the story drives on.
Then comes the second half of the book. I’ll admit, I think I would have caught on to the plot twist had I not skimmed too much during the first half. I was VERY pleasantly surprised, and thats all I’ll say. It changed everything for me.
For those considering reading this book – I’d say go ahead… don’t be turned off by the cover, or the reviews. Yes it begins this way, but I can promise you, the story takes a big turn, and the intensity spikes way up! Keep going friends, keep going!
